Paplume vs Smallpdf
Smallpdf has the best inline paywall design we have seen — Pro compression levels show a live estimated output size before you pay. But like every major PDF site, it processes files on servers: in our walkthrough, uploads went to pluto.smallpdf.com and then to cloud storage before processing. Paplume local tools never upload your file, and stronger compression levels are free during Beta.
Where files are processed
Smallpdf
Uploaded to Smallpdf infrastructure (observed: pluto.smallpdf.com → cloud object storage → task.smallpdf.com)
Paplume
Local tools run entirely in your browser — no file upload (verify in DevTools → Network)

Competitor facts verified in our own hands-on walkthrough on 2026-07-31. Prices and limits change over time — always check the competitor’s current pages. We state only what we observed; no ratings or scores are invented.
The honest part
Credit where due: Smallpdf’s workspace UI is desktop-grade, its live size estimate on paid tiers is excellent (we adopted the same idea, free), and it offers mobile apps and integrations we do not. Our difference is that processing is local and the strong compression levels cost nothing during Beta.

FAQ
How can I check that Paplume really does not upload my file?
Open your browser DevTools → Network tab, then process a PDF with any local tool. You will not see a single file-upload request — processing happens in your browser via WebAssembly.
Does Smallpdf watermark free files?
Not in the compression run we verified. Some features and limits differ by tool and change over time — check their site for current behavior.
Why does Paplume show an estimated output size too?
Because it is genuinely useful. We show a pre-processing size estimate on compression tools — computed locally by sampling pages, consuming no quota.
