A Smallpdf alternative with strong compression, free
The most common reason to look for a Smallpdf alternative is the Pro gate: in our walkthrough, Moderate and Strong compression levels carried a Pro crown. Paplume offers all compression levels — including compress-to-an-exact-target-size — free during Beta, and processes files locally in your browser instead of uploading them.

The honest part
Smallpdf’s workspace and its live output-size estimate are genuinely great design — we say so in our detailed comparison. If you rely on its integrations (Drive, Dropbox, mobile apps), it may still fit you better. Our pitch is narrower: strong compression, free, without uploading your file.

FAQ
How can I check that Paplume really does not upload my file?
Open your browser DevTools → Network tab, then process a PDF with any local tool. You will not see a single file-upload request — processing happens in your browser via WebAssembly.
Does Paplume compress as well as Smallpdf Pro?
Results depend on the file. Our compressor shows an honest pre-run estimate (computed locally, no quota) and, in target-size mode, tells you the reachable floor instead of pretending any size is achievable. If compression would not help, we say so and consume no quota.
